Overview
A UNESCO World heritage site, Masada Fortress National Park contains the 1st century fortress built by King Herod as well as the remnants from both the Romans and 1000 Jewish rebels. 2000 years ago, the Jewish rebels escaped to Masada from the advancing Romans and following a siege, ended their lives rather than surrender.
The fortress, built on a plateau 400 meters above the Dead Sea can be accessed either by taking the cable car or by hiking on two different trails, the Snake trail or the Ramp trail. At the top, view archaeological ruins including Herod’s northern palace and storeroom as well as the rebels’ synagogue and mikveh.
Masada contains the most complete remains of a Roman siege anywhere in the world including a siege wall, siege ramp and camps built by the Romans. Visit the uniquely laid-out museum, enjoy the awe inspiring views and the sound and light show held during the evening.
Note: Additional fees apply for the cable car ride and the Snake trail. See website for details.
