Overview

Visit the Abbell synagogue at the Hadassah University Medical Center and view the three meter tall stained glass windows created by Marc Chagall. Chagall spent two years on the project with his assistant Charles Marq, applying a special process which allowed him to use up to three colors on a pane, instead of the traditional monochromatic method.

See the twelve windows, each of which is focused on a specific color, featuring a quotation with a depiction of the blessing given by Jacob to each of his twelve sons.

Overview

Founded in 1965, the Israel Museum is the largest in Israel and ranked as one of the top art and archaeology museums in the world.  Consisting of a comprehensive collection of almost 500,000 objects, the Museum houses objects from prehistory to present day in Archaeology, Fine Arts, Jewish Art and Life and boasts one of the largest collections of biblical and Holy Land archaeology in the world.  In 2010, the Israel Museum completed an extensive upgrade of its 20-acre complex including the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Wing for Jewish Art and Life.

From the Middle Ages to the present, the Israel Museum Wing for Jewish Art and Life exhibits the secular and religious culture of Jewish communities worldwide.

Experience the five different themes displayed in the galleries: (1) See ritual items used in life-cycle ceremonies in “The Rhythm of Life: Birth, Marriage, Death,” and learn about the varied and colorful rituals that have evolved over the years.

(2) View rare Hebrew manuscripts in “Illuminating the Script” some dating back to the 10th century CE, elaborately decorated with artwork, illuminated script, and at times gold and silver.

(3) Learn about the Sabbath and holidays and see related artifacts in “The Cycle of the Jewish Year.”

(4) Explore traditional and modern dress and jewelry of various communities in “Costume and Jewelry: A Matter of Identity.” Understand the impact of segregation versus integration and traditional customs versus modernization.

(5) View four reconstructed and elaborately decorated synagogues from Germany, Italy, India and South America, as well as Torah scroll decorations in “The Synagogue Route:  Holiness and Beauty.”
