Overview

Housed in an ancient stone building, see displays that document the Stockade and Tower settlements that were built in response to the Arab revolts when the Peel Commission recommended dividing Palestine by settlement patterns. Learn about the need for immediate security and secrecy, causing the Stockade and Tower settlements to be built literally in one night. Fifty-two of them were built between the years 1936-39, and Hanita was one of the most important settlements as it was the furthest north and provided security for settlements south of it. Learn about the purchase of the land for Hanita and that it was 800 meters from the nearest road so building materials were carried by hand and donkey to the site. See how 400 members of the Haganah provided security from Arab attackers during the initial months of its existence. In addition to pictures, documents and letters from the first settlers of Hanita, watch an 18 minute audio-visual presentation on the settlement of Hanita and there is an activity book for children.  In the archaeology section, see artifacts from the Stone Age and the Canaanite period discovered in and around Hanita and view the mosaic floor from a 6th-7th century Byzantine church alongside a model of the church.
