Overview

The Banias Nature Reserve (a.k.a. Hermon Stream) has abundant nature, Israel’s largest waterfall and a range of antiquities.

Take the 90 minute trail to where the Banias spring turns into the beautiful cascading Banias waterfall. Observe stunning views from the 80 meter long hanging bridge over the Hermon stream on the way to the waterfall.

Access the Banias cave from a stepped path and view the remnants of a temple to Pan on a natural terrace along the cliff. Remnants include courtyards, a grotto and niches for rituals. Also see remnants of the white marble temple that King Herod later built over the area.

Take the 45 minute loop trail to view Greco-Roman ruins such as the Cardo Maximus (a colonnaded street that connects both ends of the city) and the Palace of Agrippa II, as well as streets, aqueducts, courtyards, a synagogue, a church, and a bathhouse.

The trail then passes by a hydroelectric power station, a reconstructed Matroof flour mill (the only water-powered mill still operating in Israel), and the Officer’s Pool full of Capoeta damascena fish. Near the flour mill you will find the remains of Crusader fortifications, towers, walls, a citadel and an elaborate gate house.
