Overview
Beit HaMeiri museum documents 200 years of the struggles and challenges that Safed Jews faced. Founded in 1980 by Yechezkel HaMeiri, a fifth-generation native, Beit HaMeiri has several exhibits including: Safed Residents (paintings, photos and stories from the 1800 and 1900’s); Reconstructed Room (from turn of the century), Religious Life of Safed (ritual items, inscribed stones, illuminated manuscripts and candlesticks from several generations) Heroic Safed (documents residents’ struggle for survival up to the liberation of Safed in 1948), and the Yechhezkel HaMeiri exhibit, (contains the museum founder’s articles, books and research papers).
Visit the garden, see the panoramic view of Mt. Meron, the Ari synagogue and mikveh from the terrace, watch actors reenact past events in period costumes, participate in educational activities, and view various performances throughout Safed organized by the museum. Schedule a Klezmer performance in an ancient Beit Knesset with harmonica player Uri Filler (Israeli Harmonica Trio) or with singer and composer Sheri Zweig. Meet a Sofer (scribe) and choose from a variety of guided tours through the Safed alleys. The museum offers historical archives, special activities for class trips, parties as well as a workbook about Safed that can be downloaded.
